‘Understand and Treat Migraines With Dr. Andrew Blumenfeld’ DVD Released By Keller Laboratories
Oct 15, 2008 -In this DVD, Dr. Andrew Blumenfeld presents the latest news on migraine diagnosis and treatment, including his rationale for prescribing the NTI device. He also examines how physicians and dentists can partner together in taking care of patients who suffer from migraines.
Dr. Blumenfeld is an active researcher in headache diagnostics and therapy, who completed his neurology residency at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He is the Director of the Headache Center in Southern California and a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Headache Society.
This DVD diagrams how jaw clenching inputs stress on the trigeminal nerve, and creates dysfunctional pain-instigating activity. Trigeminal nerve endings are located throughout the head and face and are connected to the thalamus nerve located in the neck.
The NTI is a preventative migraine treatment that is effective because it reduces jaw clenching. Hence, the trigeminal nerve is able to rest during the night and dysfunction is limited. BOTOX injections into the temporal muscle enhance the NTI, further preventing nerve stress.
The use of medication to stop headaches is also analyzed in the DVD. Chronic head pain leads to overuse of medication, and Dr. Blumenfeld illustrates how this initiates a cycle which causes more headaches. Furthermore, chronic headaches cause depression and anxiety which serve as catalysts for more headaches. This is why preventative treatment of migraines is often times more effective than acute treatment.
